A family wine estate since 1848, Haut-Lirou, located on the slopes of Pic Saint-Loup, in the heart of the Hérault department, above the Lirou river, is today one of the largest in the appellation and extends over 140 hectares of vines for which it was originally necessary to clear and crush blocks of stone.
This vineyard inspires a way of life that the estate’s wines, made from the region’s iconic grape varieties such as Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, reflect in each vintage. To obtain such nectars, Haut-Lirou practices traditional and sustainable viticulture: short pruning to control yields, soil aeration, leaf removal, trellising, and natural manure.
At the Haut-Lirou estate, the grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted to ensure the quality of the harvest. The grape varieties are vinified in separate vats, each enclosed, and the wine is aged for 12 to 16 months in French oak barrels.
The estate has been awarded the High Environmental Value label. Nestled in the heart of the garrigue, the vines are truly integrated into nature: trees surround the plots, large spaces are left free to grow, grassy strips serve as a buffer between ditches and waterways, and birdhouses, beehives, and bat shelters are installed on the various estates.
Each wine is a true expression of the winemaker’s vision and the character of their terroir. Discover a selection that embodies their unique approach, from cultivation to vinification.
The unique terroir, spread across the garrigue, on hard limestone terraces and on clay-limestone, marl and basalt terroirs, gives the wines great richness and exceptional aromatic complexity. The wines of the Haut-Lirou estate are renowned for their elegance and finesse. The red wines are characterized by aromas of red and black fruits, spices and garrigue, while the white wines present aromas of exotic fruits and white flowers.
